Who Watches the Ads When AI Becomes the Ad Platform?

ChatGPT Ads is rapidly becoming a new performance marketing channel. But as advertising moves into conversational AI, marketers face a familiar problem in an unfamiliar environment: can they trust the traffic they are paying for?

Digital advertising has spent years learning that a click is not necessarily a customer. Bots click. Automated systems visit landing pages. Attribution systems count interactions that may have little or no commercial value. Now the same problem is following advertising into generative AI.

Spider Labs has expanded its Spider AF anti-ad-fraud platform to identify and analyze paid traffic originating from ChatGPT Ads. On the surface, this looks like another measurement integration. In reality, it points to a much bigger issue for marketers: as AI advertising grows, independent verification is becoming part of the infrastructure surrounding the channel.

ChatGPT is becoming an advertising environment

ChatGPT Ads is no longer merely an experiment. OpenAI says the advertising business has reached a $1 billion annualized revenue run rate less than 200 days after launch, with tens of thousands of advertisers using the platform. The company is also expanding advertiser access internationally.

The attraction for marketers is obvious. Traditional search advertising often tries to infer intent from relatively limited query signals. A conversational AI can potentially work with considerably more context. Someone might explain what they need, their budget, their preferences and the constraints affecting their decision before an advertising opportunity appears.
