Why agentic commerce is the new competitive advantage – and how Lazada is leading the shift

For more than a decade, Southeast Asia’s eCommerce boom has been fueled by scale – more users, more sellers, more products, more deliveries. But as the market matures, growth is no longer guaranteed by size alone. The next competitive frontier lies in intelligence. Increasingly, the platforms that can understand real-time intent, automate complex decision-making and orchestrate millions of micro-interactions will define the future of retail.

Lazada’s latest move, ahead of the 11.11 shopping festival, offers a clear signal of this shift. By launching a fully integrated suite of AI agents spanning shopping discovery, after-sales resolution, logistics, product listing optimization, and marketing automation, the company is laying the foundation for what it calls “agentic commerce.” This is not AI applied to existing workflows; it is AI woven into the fabric of every moment in the customer and seller experience.

The shift toward autonomous digital retail

At its core, agentic commerce moves beyond rule-based automation toward AI systems that exhibit autonomy. It involves the ability to sense, interpret, decide and act in real time. These agents behave less like tools and more like intelligent collaborators. They reduce friction not by accelerating human tasks, but by absorbing them entirely.

AI Lazzie, for instance, is no longer a chatbot but a discovery companion. It can interpret shopper intent, compare products, contextualize preferences, and recommend the ideal choice within seconds. It represents a shift from keyword-based search to conversational, advisory retail.

The Refund Agent performs a similarly transformative role. Instead of a multi-step, emotionally charged negotiation between shopper, seller, and support teams, refund disputes can now be resolved autonomously within minutes. The outcome is not just speed but trust, defined by consistent, unbiased, and data-driven decisions.
