In 2026, we realized that artificial intelligence (AI) is no longer just a strategic advantage for marketers but a foundational to how brands understand audiences, deliver personalization, and orchestrate real-time engagement. Yet as organizations unlock AI’s potential to drive growth and customer experiences, a stark duality has emerged: the very technologies that enable market innovation are also empowering adversaries.

According to the newly released IBM 2026 X-Force Threat Intelligence Index, cybercriminals are leveraging AI to automate and accelerate attacks on enterprise systems, exposing persistent security gaps that threaten brand trust and digital resilience.

The new threat landscape: AI as a force multiplier for adversaries

IBM’s latest threat index paints a sobering picture: attackers are exploiting basic security weaknesses with unprecedented speed, aided by intelligent tooling that scans, discovers and weaponizes vulnerabilities in minutes rather than weeks. A 44 % increase in attacks beginning with public-facing application exploits and a near-fourfold surge in large supply chain compromises since 2020, illustrate how digital ecosystems have become fertile ground for exploitation.

For marketers, this matters. The platforms that power digital campaigns, from cloud infrastructure to CRM systems and AI-driven personalization engines, are part of the modern attack surface. When attackers can weaponize misconfigurations and credential weaknesses, the downstream risks include brand reputation damage, customer data exposure, and loss of trust.
