For years, digital advertising platforms have competed by adding more data, more metrics and increasingly sophisticated optimization tools. Meta’s latest move suggests that the next competitive frontier may be something quite different: making all that complexity disappear behind a conversation.
Meta is expanding Meta AI with new capabilities aimed particularly at small businesses, including the ability to connect the AI assistant to an advertising account. Once connected, businesses can ask questions about their advertising activity in natural language, analyze campaign performance and receive guidance on how their advertising budgets might be used more effectively.
At first glance, this looks like another useful AI feature. For marketers, however, the more significant development is the interface itself. Generative AI is beginning to sit between the marketer and the advertising platform.
From dashboards to dialogue
Digital advertising has traditionally required marketers to navigate dashboards, reports, filters and attribution views before they can answer even relatively straightforward questions. Which ads are performing best? Where is the budget being wasted? Which campaign needs attention? What changed during the past week?
Connecting Meta AI directly to campaign data potentially changes that workflow. Instead of finding the appropriate report, selecting metrics and interpreting the resulting numbers, an advertiser can increasingly start with the business question.
