Why operational design, not generative models, will define the next era of marketing

Artificial intelligence is already transforming marketing at an extraordinary speed. IBM’s newly introduced “Forward Deployed Units” model offers an important glimpse into how enterprise AI execution is evolving. Rather than treating AI as a standalone capability, the model reframes it as an organizational system where senior human operators work alongside specialized AI agents to continuously execute, adapt, and optimize business functions.  For marketing leaders, this shift may prove far more significant than the latest generation AI model.

The end of traditional marketing structures

For decades, marketing scaled through manpower. Larger campaigns required larger teams, more agencies, more specialists, and increasingly fragmented workflows. Strategy, creative, analytics, and execution often existed in separate silos connected through slow handoffs and lengthy production cycles. AI disrupts this structure entirely.

Today, intelligent systems can generate content, automate segmentation, optimize media spend, predict customer behavior, and continuously refine messaging in real time. As automation absorbs operational complexity, the value of marketing shifts upward from execution toward orchestration.
