Can AI Build Brand Trust, or Destroy It?

Trust has always been the hardest currency for a brand to earn, and the easiest to lose. Over the years, I’ve watched brands navigate the digital frontier, and one thing is clear: trust is fragile. Building it takes consistent, authentic actions; while destroying it can happen in an instant through broken promises, ethical lapses, or poor customer experiences.

Today, AI has entered the arena, and it’s changing the rules entirely. AI can be a powerful ally; it personalizes experiences, predicts customer needs, and helps brands respond faster than ever. But it also comes with new risks. Deepfakes, fake reviews, and AI-generated influencers can make consumers question what’s real and question your brand along with it.

The difference between building trust and destroying it often comes down to transparency. Audiences notice when brands hide behind AI or use it to manipulate rather than serve. When we’re clear about how AI is used, whether in content creation, customer service, or product recommendations, we signal respect for the consumer. That honesty itself becomes part of the brand.

A real example comes from Agoda, the travel platform, which recently used an AI-generated advertising video to promote its brand. By leveraging AI, they created visually engaging content that connects with audiences at scale. Done responsibly, this kind of campaign can build trust by demonstrating innovation and relevance. Done poorly, it risks appearing manipulative, potentially damaging credibility.
