Beyond Prompt Engineering:
Welcome to the Age of AI Agents

For the past three years, marketers have been learning how to write better prompts. Prompt engineering became the language of generative AI, enabling teams to create content faster, analyze data more efficiently, and deliver increasingly personalized customer experiences.

However, prompt engineering was never the destination. It was simply the first step towards a much larger transformation.

Today, the industry is entering the age of Agentic AI, where intelligent systems pursue business goals rather than simply respond to instructions. Recent discussions among technology leaders, including Adobe, indicate that organizations are moving beyond prompting individual AI models towards managing AI agents capable of planning, reasoning, collaborating, and executing complex, multi-step workflows.

This represents a fundamental shift in how organizations will work with AI.

Instead of instructing AI one prompt at a time, businesses are beginning to deploy AI agents that can research, analyze, collaborate, make recommendations, and complete entire workflows with minimal human intervention. The conversation is no longer centered on writing better prompts. It is increasingly about orchestrating intelligent systems that deliver measurable business outcomes.

From prompts to outcomes

Traditional generative AI follows a familiar pattern. A user writes a prompt, the model generates a response, and the human decides what happens next.

AI agents fundamentally change that process.

Rather than responding to a single instruction, an AI agent can break a business objective into multiple tasks, gather information from connected systems, evaluate alternatives, refine its approach, and complete work across multiple business applications.

Consider the launch of a new product. Instead of manually coordinating market research, competitor analysis, creative development, media planning, campaign execution, and performance reporting, a marketing leader can assign the objective to an AI agent. The agent researches the target audience, analyses competitors, develops creative concepts, personalizes messaging, schedules campaigns, monitors performance, and recommends optimization opportunities as...
