For years, digital advertising was built around one core principle: finding the right audience. Marketers invested heavily in demographic targeting, behavioral data, third-party cookies, and lookalike audiences, believing that better audience segmentation would naturally lead to better campaign performance. Artificial intelligence is reshaping that approach. Platforms such as Meta’s Advantage+ and Google’s Performance Max increasingly use AI to determine who sees an advertisement, when it appears, and which users are most likely to engage or convert. Rather than requiring marketers to build countless audience segments manually, these platforms continuously analyze real-time signals, user behavior, contextual information, and campaign performance to automatically optimize campaign delivery.
Creative becomes a critical signal
As AI assumes greater responsibility for audience targeting and campaign optimization, the role of creative has become more important than ever. Headlines, visuals, videos, messaging, and storytelling are no longer simply the final assets of a campaign. They have become important signals that AI uses, alongside advertiser objectives, conversion data, and user behavior, to identify which audiences are most likely to respond.
