As AI moves beyond platform boundaries, visibility shifts from placement to selection, forcing marketers to rethink how brands are discovered, trusted, and chosen.

Something important just shifted, but most of the industry is looking in the wrong place. As reported by Ars Technica, OpenAI appears to be loosening its tightly coupled structure with Microsoft. On the surface, this looks like a routine evolution of a high-profile partnership. It isn’t. What’s changing is not the partnership itself, but the level of exclusivity around it. And that distinction matters more than it seems.

For the past two years, access to advanced AI models has largely flowed through Microsoft’s ecosystem—concentrating control across infrastructure, distribution, and commercial access into a single channel. That structure is now starting to crack. And as it does, AI is shifting from something you access through platforms to something that operates across them. That shift doesn’t just change who builds AI. It changes who controls visibility.

AI is no longer a product; it’s becoming infrastructure

AI is no longer behaving like a standalone product. It is starting to function like infrastructure. Just as cloud computing evolved beyond individual providers and became embedded across industries, AI is now following a similar trajectory, integrating into systems, operating across environments, and increasingly disappearing while still shaping outcomes. Like electricity or cloud computing, AI becomes most powerful when it’s invisible—and everywhere.  This is the key inflection point most of the industry is underestimating.
