At first glance, NTT DOCOMO and NEC’s launch of Japan’s first commercial 5G core on AWS appears to be a telecommunications milestone. Yet beneath the technical achievement lies a structural shift that marketers cannot afford to ignore. The companies have not only deployed a hybrid cloud-based 5G core; they have automated its design and construction using Agentic AI combined with GitOps, reducing deployment time by approximately 80 percent.
This signals something fundamental. Infrastructure is no longer a passive foundation. It is becoming intelligent, adaptive and increasingly autonomous. And when networks begin to build themselves, the speed and scale of digital services change dramatically.
The rise of AI-orchestrated networks
Traditionally, constructing a 5G core required extensive manual configuration, verification and coordination. Complex files had to be designed, adjusted and tested by specialized engineers, often across long timelines. DOCOMO’s approach replaces much of that manual process with AI agents capable of generating configuration values, issuing build instructions and executing workflows through GitOps in a hybrid cloud environment.
The result is not simply operational efficiency. It is a new model of infrastructure management in which AI shortens cycles, reduces human error and increases reproducibility. Networks become programmable at a higher level of abstraction.
For marketing leaders, this development may appear distant, but it is not. When infrastructure becomes faster to deploy and easier to scale, innovation above the infrastructure layer accelerates as well.
Elastic capacity in an attention economy
One of the defining characteristics of the new 5G core is elasticity. By operating in a hybrid cloud environment that combines DOCOMO’s virtualization platform with AWS, capacity can expand dynamically in response to sudden traffic surges and contract when demand normalizes.
In an attention-driven economy, where viral moments and live digital events can trigger unpredictable spikes, this flexibility is critical. Marketing campaigns increasingly rely...
