Every transformative technology follows a similar path. Early adopters gain an advantage, adoption spreads, and eventually the technology itself stops being the differentiator.
Artificial intelligence is entering that phase now.
According to ON24’s The State of AI in B2B Marketing in 2026, 93% of B2B marketers are already using or planning to use AI. What was once an experimental capability has become a mainstream business tool.
For marketers, that changes the conversation. The debate is no longer about whether organizations should adopt AI. Most already have. The more important question is whether AI is creating a genuine competitive advantage or simply making everyone faster at producing more content.
The evidence suggests a new divide is emerging.
AI is everywhere. Results are not.
One of the report’s most striking findings is that top-performing organizations are more than twice as likely to be significant AI users as their peers. More importantly, they are far more likely to report major productivity gains and plan further AI investment.
This distinction matters, since technology adoption alone rarely creates superior performance. History offers countless examples. Email did not create a competitive advantage. Websites did not create a competitive advantage. CRM systems did not create a competitive advantage....
