Social media trends 2023: Key insights & strategies for marketers

Talkwalker, a leading consumer intelligence and deep listening company, and Khoros, an award-winning leader in digital-first customer engagement, have released their annual Social Media Trends 2023 Report. Titled From Insights to Action: How to Disrupt a Disruptive Consumer, the report leverages Talkwalker’s social listening and AI-enabled analytics to identify the ten most impactful social media trends for 2023. It also explores how consumers are driving these trends globally and across Asia.

The report features industry-specific social engagement actions that marketers can implement, supported by insights from Khoros’s Strategic Services team. Additionally, more than 70 regional and global industry experts contributed their perspectives.

Key social media trends for 2023

1. Social Commerce Gains Prominence

Post-pandemic digital growth and rising living costs have fueled consumer demand for affordability. As a result, more people are exploring new shopping channels, particularly social commerce. However, some countries are more prepared for this shift than others. In Southeast Asia, online shopping surged in 2021, with e-commerce and social commerce accounting for over 50% of online purchases. This trend will continue in 2023 and beyond, as social media platforms enhance the shopping experience to make it more seamless.

2. The metaverse rush will pay off

Discussions about the metaverse are gaining traction among Southeast Asian audiences, with over 5.9 million conversations recorded on social channels in the past year. Indonesia leads the region, generating 60% of mentions and a third of total engagements. The Philippines follows closely, contributing nearly 24% of mentions and 29% of engagements. Brands planning metaverse campaigns must stay updated on the latest conversations and align these new realities with consumers’ real-world needs.

3. Sustainability takes center stage
