Power, justice, and harmony in the age of AI

During my studies, I developed an interest in political theory. This has inspired me to imagine how renowned philosophers might respond to AI’s impact on society. I aim to demonstrate that political philosophy offers valuable insights. These insights could guide effective AI regulation and promote societal harmony.

Had Montesquieu lived to see the age of intelligent systems, for instance, I am sure he would approach AI’s rise with caution. He would scrutinize its potential to either destabilize or fortify societal balance and harmony. Moreover, his reflections on governance, liberty, and justice could illuminate ways to integrate AI into society while preserving democratic values. He would aim to avoid authoritarian pitfalls and serve the collective good. Through his philosophy, one may imagine a framework for AI governance. This framework would respect both technological progress and the principles of a free society.

‘Separation of powers’ in AI

Montesquieu’s philosophy revolved around balancing power. This served as a safeguard against tyranny and unchecked authority. Concentrating AI power would inevitably threaten an individual’s liberty. This principle serves as a warning. Any single entity, governmental or corporate, gaining unrestrained control over powerful AI would disrupt social harmony.

Montesquieu might advocate for a multilayered governance structure. Independent institutions could oversee different aspects of AI’s development and application. One body could oversee AI’s ethical implications. Another could ensure transparency and accountability. A third could assess AI’s socio-economic impacts, particularly on labor and inequality. By distributing oversight, his approach could prevent AI from becoming a tool of centralized control. Instead, it would promote AI as a resource that serves society’s collective needs and enhances harmony.
