Most Marketers Are Using AI to Perfect Yesterday

For many marketing teams, artificial intelligence has become the ultimate productivity hack. Campaigns are produced faster, reports are generated automatically, customer insights arrive in seconds, and content pipelines rarely stand still. On the surface, it looks like a transformation. Yet beyond the marketing department, a much bigger transformation is already underway.

A CEO of an AI-powered B2B marketplace recently revealed that he built production software during his daily subway commute—not from a laptop, but through voice notes. He described ideas into his phone, while AI coding agents translated those conversations into working software integrations before he even reached the office. Elsewhere, a 20-person agricultural technology company has largely stopped hiring. Not because business has slowed, but because AI now performs more than half the work across multiple business functions. At another software company, employees with no technical background routinely fix software bugs and launch product experiments without waiting for engineering teams.

These examples are drawn from a recent McKinsey study by Fabian Metzeler, Melanie Krawina, Paul Jenkins, Philipp Hillenbrand, and Alexander Ringler, who interviewed leaders from 15 AI-native companies around the world. What emerged from those conversations was not simply a story about advanced technology. It was a fundamentally different way of thinking about work.
