Gartner expects AI, digital platform and immersive experiences to drive digital business

As every year, we take a look at the newly released Gartner Hype Cycle for Emerging Technologies, especially since Gartner’s analysts identified three mega-trends we are particularly interested in this month, namely Artificial Intelligence (AI), immersive experiences and  digital platforms.

Compared to the Hype Cycle from 2016, some data points have hardly changed, for example Augmented and Virtual Reality (AR/VR), where AR still seems to be in the valley of disillusion and VR a little bit further on the upgrade of the Hype Cycle.
gartner1Anyway, all in all there are no signs of big changes compared to last year, but “technology will continue to become more human-centric to the point where it will introduce transparency between people, businesses and things”, Gartner states. “This relationship will become much more entwined as the evolution of technology becomes more adaptive, contextual and fluid within the workplace, at home, and in interacting with businesses and other people”, the technology research firm affirms.

“Enterprise architects who are focused on technology innovation must evaluate these high-level trends and the featured technologies, as well as the potential impact on their businesses,” said Mike J. Walker, research director at Gartner. “In addition to the potential impact on businesses, these trends provide a significant opportunity for enterprise architecture leaders to help senior business and IT leaders respond to digital business opportunities and threats by creating signature-ready actionable and diagnostic deliverables that guide investment decisions.”

When it comes to transparently immersive experiences, technology is introducing transparency between people, businesses and things, and as technology evolves to be more adaptive, contextual and fluid, it will become more human-centric. Besides AR, companies should look to digital workspaces, connected homes, virtual reality and 4D printing in this realm.
