Navigating risk in the Metaverse: strategies for organizations

The Metaverse, a term coined by Neal Stephenson in his 1992 science fiction novel “Snow Crash,” is no longer confined to the realm of fiction. It’s rapidly becoming a tangible reality, with major organizations worldwide delving into its possibilities. However, with great opportunity comes great risk, and managing these risks effectively is crucial for success in this burgeoning digital frontier.

Embracing the Metaverse: opportunities and risks

Tenable’s recent study across Australia, the United Kingdom, and the United States sheds light on organizations’ perceptions of the risks and rewards associated with Metaverse investments. As the next evolution of the internet in 3D, the Metaverse offers individuals digital real estate and businesses the chance to build virtual entities with their own rights and specifications.

Major brands like Disney, JP Morgan, and Gucci are already paving the way with ambitious Metaverse projects. However, organizations charging headlong into these investments must tread carefully, as the landscape is still evolving, and uncertainties abound.

The imperative of security

One of the primary concerns surrounding Metaverse initiatives is cybersecurity. As organizations transition into this virtual space, they open themselves up to a myriad of new threats. The integration of personal identifiable information (PII) across various services within the Metaverse raises red flags for cybersecurity professionals, with security breaches and identity theft ranking high among the barriers to entry.

To mitigate these risks, establishing foundational cybersecurity practices within existing infrastructure is paramount. While certain Metaverses leverage blockchain technology, which inherently offers a level of security, ensuring smart contract audits and robust cybersecurity measures are in place remains critical.
