The new reputation war and how SMEs can stay protected

AI has become one of the most powerful forces shaping modern marketing. It personalizes customer journeys, optimizes campaigns in real time and helps businesses scale content faster than ever before. But while AI has opened remarkable new possibilities, it has also unleashed a growing wave of risks, especially for small and medium-sized businesses trying to protect their hard-earned reputation.

One of the most pressing of these risks is fake reviews. According to new analysis from AnyBusiness.com.au, global Google searches for “fake business reviews” have exploded by 1,026% in the past year. In just the last month, more than 68,000 people searched for the term, reflecting a collective unease about what’s real, what’s fabricated and how quickly trust can unravel.

“Reviews drive everything—trust, clicks, bookings, footfall, conversions,” explains Mary Tamvakologos, Managing Director of AnyBusiness.com.au. “So, when fake reviews spread, SMEs feel the hit immediately. The good news is there are proactive ways to stay ahead of it.”

A new era of review manipulation

The reason this matters so much in 2025 is simple: AI has made fake reviews easier, faster and more convincing. What once took a competitor or bad actor significant effort can now be generated by a model in seconds. And because search engines increasingly reward businesses that appear trustworthy, a handful of fabricated reviews can distort rankings, influence customers and create real commercial harm.

Fake reviews rarely appear subtly. They tend to come in clusters, sudden spikes, repeated language, strange timing. For SMEs focused on serving customers, these patterns can be easy to miss. That’s why regular monitoring is no longer optional. Checking review platforms weekly and setting up automated alerts can mean the difference between catching a malicious review early and discovering it after it has already influenced potential customers.
