The double-edged innovation:
AI in marketing’s power to create and destroy

Artificial Intelligence (AI) has moved from the sidelines to the very core of marketing strategy. What began as chatbots and recommendation engines has evolved into systems capable of shaping consumer behavior, optimizing engagement, and redefining competition. As Bongs Lainjo notes in The Thematic Dynamics of Artificial Intelligence: Will it Make or Mar?, AI is no neutral tool. It is an innovation powerful enough to build brands at unprecedented speed, and just as capable of destroying the trust on which those brands depend.  For marketers, the question is urgent: how can AI’s power be harnessed without sacrificing consumer confidence and long-term brand equity?

AI’s promise: Precision at scale

The promise is undeniable. AI automates campaign execution, reduces errors, and delivers real-time optimization. More importantly, its ability to analyze massive datasets allows marketers to spot hidden patterns, refine segmentation, and hyper-personalize engagement.

This is more than efficiency, it’s reinvention. Just as AI revolutionizes healthcare diagnostics, in marketing it lets brands track consumer sentiment across millions of data points instantly. Strategy shifts from quarterly reports to live signals, creating agility in markets where attention is scarce and fleeting.

Yet, the same qualities that make AI powerful also make it precarious. What allows brands to anticipate consumer needs can just as easily push them into manipulation. And that’s where the risks begin.

AI’s peril: From personalization to manipulation

Every advance carries risk. Algorithms trained on biased data can reinforce stereotypes. Personalization can slide into intrusion, leaving consumers feeling manipulated rather than understood. One company’s anticipation is another consumer’s surveillance.

At the same time, AI is transforming the marketing workforce. As content creation and media planning become automated, roles are shifting toward oversight, ethics, and strategy.
