The hidden cost of convenience for marketers and learners on ChatGPT

For good reason, groundbreaking study from the MIT Media Lab has gone viral. It presents perhaps the most comprehensive analysis to date on how the use of ChatGPT affects cognitive performance, memory, and engagement.

By combining EEG scans, NLP analysis, and human interviews, the researchers didn’t just look at what ChatGPT helps us produce; they examined what it might be taking from us in the process.

Three participant groups were studied: one using GPT-4o (LLM group), one using traditional search engines, and one relying purely on their own thinking (Brain-only group). In the fourth session, participants switched roles to assess how prior cognitive effort influences subsequent AI interaction. The findings carry profound implications—not only for education but also for marketing, content creation, and the future of AI-assisted work.

1. The cognitive debt dilemma

When participants used ChatGPT to write their essays, EEG results showed the weakest neural connectivity, particularly in the alpha and beta bands, signals associated with attention, memory, and information integration. In contrast, the Brain-only group exhibited the strongest and most widespread brain activity across all frequency bands.

The researchers coined this effect “cognitive debt,” a nod to “technical debt” in software development, where short-term efficiency leads to long-term inefficiency and fragility.

For marketers, this is a wake-up call. If your creative teams rely heavily on LLMs to shortcut ideation, you may be accumulating cognitive debt that eventually dulls your team’s unique thinking, weakening brand identity and campaign innovation.

2. The memory breakdown

Memory impairment was one of the most striking findings. 83% of LLM users could not quote a single sentence from their own essays written just minutes before, compared to just 11% in other groups. Even when prompted to summarize key arguments, the LLM group underperformed.

This has wide-ranging implications for strategic planning and...
