Advertising crosses the trillion-dollar threshold

As we move into 2025, the global advertising industry is reflecting on a landmark year. In 2024, total ad spending surpassed $1 trillion for the first time, marking a 10.7% year-on-year growth, according to WARC’s Global Ad Spend Outlook 2024/25. This milestone underscores the continued dominance and innovative transformation of digital advertising platforms.

Digital advertising leads the charge

Digital advertising has firmly established itself as the cornerstone of the global ad industry, capturing approximately 73% of total spending in 2024. With expenditure reaching $741.4 billion, the sector saw a robust growth rate of 14.1%. Social media platforms—led by Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok—have been pivotal, with social media ad spending alone surging by 19.3% to $252.7 billion. This growth highlights the effectiveness of these platforms in offering advertisers highly targeted, data-driven campaigns that resonate with modern consumers.

Search engine advertising continued to play a critical role in digital ad revenue. Google maintained its dominance with estimated earnings of $197.7 billion, despite facing increasing regulatory pressures. Microsoft’s Bing held a smaller but stable 5.9% market share, while speculation about Apple’s potential entry into the search engine market suggests future disruptions on the horizon.

The rise of retail media

Retail media emerged as a transformative force in the advertising landscape, experiencing a 16.4% rise in spending during Q4 2024 alone, reaching $46.2 billion. Amazon led this sector, generating $16.9 billion in ad revenue by year-end. Retail media’s value lies in its ability to connect advertisers directly with consumers during key moments in the shopping journey, offering precision targeting and measurable ROI.

Connected TV (CTV) also played a significant role, attracting a quarter of retail media investments. Leveraging advanced targeting capabilities, CTV has enabled brands to deliver impactful, personalized messages, bridging the gap between traditional and digital advertising formats.
